hello beautiful people! ahead of you lies yet another #NewMusicMonday and i’m super excited about this one. i try to keep my playlist diverse and i noticed these posts haven’t necessarily reflected that as i’d like. with that being said, this week i want to introduce you all to Premo Rice, rapper from the DMV, whose latest project “Portrait of the P” has been crucial to my daily routine lately.
Premo Rice is a standout in my rotation because he has a familiar flow that sounds nothing like the typical DMV rapper. if you know anything about the rap scene in DC, then you know the sound I’m talking about. if you’re never heard any rappers from the area, just know it can become repetitive quickly. Rice brings a west-coast vibe to his hometown, and fits in pockets that you wouldn’t expect, but are still easy on the ear.
the instrumentals on this project are definitely a highlight as well. they match Rice’s mellow rap and help paint the picture of the lyricism. if i could describe this sound he’s curated, i’d call it “pimp rap” now hear me out. yes, he does talk about his “pimp” behavior all throughout and more specifically in “Pimp God Body” but aside from the explicit, lets think deeper.
to me, this is the perfect project to put on when you wanna feel fly! when you want to feel untouchable, chill, cool, like a player, this is the soundtrack to the vibe. songs like “Good Game” and “We Gon’ Keep it” are made for you to blast while you ride with the top down on a sunny day. “DEEP in my bag” is the best song to start your day and get motivated to take on the world. i feel like rap has been in a weird state because of competition and duplication. sometimes it sounds like they’re trying too hard to portray an image. “Portrait of the P” is in a lane on its’ own, clearly and successfully standing out from the others.
