y2k vibes

hi beautiful people! here is another installment of #NewMusicMonday! new music has been coming out at a crazy rate lately. always a good thing, but it can be difficult to listen to everything and really digest the music how I want. an artist who’s been on the rise for the last 2 years never fails to hold my attention. this week, we’re listening to “Heaven knows” by PinkPantheress.

Since 2021, i have been a huge fan of UK star PinkPantheress. she generated a genre of her own with a new sound that is influenced by early 2000s pop, rock, and techno. known across TikTok for her viral songs that are usually < 2 mins, the star has released her long awaited debut album with big features from Rema, Central Cee, and Kelela.

one thing that has always amazed me with PinkPantheress is her ability to make the saddest songs sound so fun and girly pop! she sticks with this formula, revealing a softer side with songs like “The aile” and “Feel complete” which is a personal favorite of mine. her perfectly pitched voice paired with this nostalgic instrumental feels like a picnic in the park on a sunny spring day. but her lyrics “I can’t imagine feelin’ that every day, you’ll buy another bottle drink it all anyway, so I guess I never knew you very well” are so raw, sad, and relatable.

i think im such a fan because of how she’s identified her target market and stuck to the niche market. it feels effortless because she is in the demographic of her target market. her music is so reminiscent of the sound of the early 2000s. her sound feels like a hug to every black girl raised with suburban angst! i think there’s a song in this album for everyone to love and i can’t wait for PinkPantheress to receive all of her flowers.
